The 2020 NBA Draft has come and gone, and now let’s take a look at the 10 NBA rookies with the best chance of success in the 2K21, who have the best chance to succeed in the months and years to come.

Aaron Nesmith

Aaron Nesmith looked like the best three-point shooter in college basketball before a season-ending foot injury. The 6’6 sophomore guard hit 52.2 percent of his three-pointers and showed an ability to hit shots from tough angles while on the move. While not an elite defender, Nesmith showed an ability to understand his role on defense and should be able to hold his own on that end. When the Boston Celtics were selecting at #14 they were shocked to still see the Vanderbilt product on the board. Nesmith can easily end up as the steal of the draft and emerge as the second or third consistent scoring option the Celtics have searched for to play alongside superstar forward Jayson Tatum.

Udoka Azubuike

Udoka Azubuike was drafted by the Utah Jazz in the 2020 NBA draft with the 27th overall pick. He is a mammoth of a human and happens to be sitting behind the league’s best defending big man and 2x Defensive Player of the Year in Rudy Gobert. If he was drafted one year earlier, we could have watched him playing with Deandre Ayton and Williamson. We could still watch him in the future playing alongside or against these two. That would be awesome to see, to be honest.

Cole Anthony

Cole Anthony was getting hyped as a potential top-three pick coming out of high school before a disappointing freshman season at North Carolina that was weighed down by a torn meniscus. At his best, Anthony can still be an electric shot-maker off the dribble with deep range. He’s impressive in the pick-and-roll, but his ideal fit at the next level should be playing off the ball next to a dynamic offensive initiator. His size will lead to questions defensively, but Anthony has always been a quality rebounder and disruptive in the passing lanes. He is now a member of the Orlando Magic and it happens to be a team with plenty of opportunity for young and hungry players. Anthony’s brimming with talent and is a baller by every sense of the word, but can Orlando help him reach his ceiling?

Obi Toppin

Obi Toppin was the New York Knicks’ prized selection in the 2020 NBA Draft. Standing at 6’9″ with a slim build (220lbs), Toppin is an Inside-Out Scorer in 2K21. Essentially, he’s a dual-threat that is capable of giving your team instant offense when his number is called. With an 80 three-point rating and an 85 driving dunk, Toppin is one of the more versatile offensive power forwards in the game. Even though Toppin is only a rookie, the Knicks don’t have the most appealing roster. So, there is an opportunity for him to become a starter right away. If so, we might see his 2K rating gradually increase throughout the NBA season.

Anthony Edwards

The first selection of the 2020 NBA Draft is Anthony Edwards, picked by the Minnesota Timberwolves! The Georgia freshman has elite quick-twitch athleticism, crazy explosiveness near the basket, and impressive shot-making ability off the dribble when he’s hot. No one is questioning Edwards’ talent level. It’s just hard to put him at No. 1 when he shot under 40 percent from the field and under 30 percent from three. It feels like Edwards would be wise to focus on defense early in his career and let his natural ability take over on offense. Anthony Edwards’ NBA 2K21 ratings are quite strong. LaMelo Ball is the third pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, picked by the Charlotte Hornets! At 6’7, Ball is a natural point guard blessed with rare vision and creativity. He finds angles that don’t exist and throws passes few other players alive would even consider. He also has the best ball-handling ability in this year’s class, able to shake defenders and create separation with tight crossovers and pace manipulation. Turning 19 years old in late August, he’s also one of the youngest players in this draft. 2K first revealed some of his best NBA 2K21 ratings, including 86 Ball Control, 86 Pass IQ, and 83 Pass Vision!

Precious Achiuwa

A massive hybrid forward Precious Achiuwa at 6’9 with a 7’2 wingspan is extremely strong and plays with energy. Their rigorous physical fitness mandates and love for energy players mean Achiuwa can have his body in the best shape of his life and can contribute meaningfully off the bench. He could certainly develop into a starter, but all the Heat are asking him to do short term is provide meaningful minutes off the bench so Bam Adebayo can rest.

Nico Mannion

The Golden State Warriors and former Arizona point guard Nico Mannion, the 48th overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft, reached an agreement on a two-way contract. Nico Mannion is a guard from Arizona with a ton of potential and craftiness that can aide in his possible success in the NBA. He now has an opportunity to learn from one of the game’s best in Curry and can be formed into a solid starting guard in the NBA.

Josh Green

Josh Green was labeled as a 3-and-D player heading into the 2020 NBA Draft and though that label seems to limit on the surface, its niche role players have thrived for years. Green is a monster athlete with a catch-and-shoot potential who can still be impactful despite a rudimentary offensive skill set. Offensively, Green can find success with straight lines or cuts to the basket but his value will ultimately be determined by how good of a shooter he becomes. He’s a superfluid athlete with quick hips who can force turnovers with a 6’10 wingspan. Green has the luxury of playing alongside one of the NBA’s true global superstars in Luka Doncic and Green can be a primary piece in helping Doncic lead the Dallas Mavericks to multiple championships.

James Wiseman

James Wiseman is the second selection in the 2020 NBA Draft, picked by the Golden State Warriors! Klay Thompson is out for the year, so their play style may change to fit the pieces they have. If James Wiseman can simply rebound at a high level and gel well with Steph Curry, he can be on the scoring end of plenty of pick-and-roll play calls at the top of the key.

1. Choose the Right MyPLAYER Build

When playing NBA 2K21, choosing a shooting method that fits your style is one of the first crucial steps all players should consider and will be a big factor in the success rate of getting buckets. Here’s how to narrow it down:

• Choose a build that has shooting as a primary skill.

2. Pick a pie chart with enough green

As a general rule of thumb, when making solid builds in MyCareer, choosing a skill pie chart with enough green (shooting ability) is crucial.

On top of that, other important physical attributes great shooters need include speed and acceleration, as these will help them evade defenders and get to open shots much easier.

So, when choosing a physical profile pie chart, it is recommended that you choose one with sufficient agility (purple).

3. Choose the Right Shooting Badges & Maximize Badge Stacking

Badges are one of the most important features of MyCareer and can separate average shooters from great ones. In short, without any badges, your player will not be able to hit their shots at a high rate – despite having a high shot rating. The shooting badges below are pretty common and can benefit any build.

2). For Non-Shooting Builds, prioritize

4). Utilize Badge Stacking

Corner Specialist + Catch & Shoot + having a teammate (online or offline) with Dimer Badge is an example of how to stack badges to maximize shot success.

4. Earn & Know Your Hot Spots / Hot Zones

To become a consistent shooter in NBA 2K21 another important feature all players must obtain are Hot Zones. These are areas on the court where your player is strong at shooting the ball.

1). How to check your Hot Spots?

In MyCareer: Go to MyCAREER > Main Menu > Stats > Roster > Right Click on Your MyPLAYER > Scroll to Shot Chart using LT/L2 and RT/R2. > Change game mode by pressing X / Square.

In MyCOURT: Go to MyCAREER > Go to MyCOURT > Press A/X ‘Play Games with Friends’ > Choose ‘Shootaround’ > Press View/Touchpad button.

2). How to get a Hot Spot?

• 60% in Paint area
• 55% in Close Shot area
• 50% in the Mid-Range area
• 40% in the 3PT area
• In your last 50 games (MyCAREER, Park, Rec, Pro-AM) with at least 10 shot attempts in each of those areas.

Tip: Equip the Hot Zone Hunter Badge to substantially increase make percentages.

3). How to get rid of a Cold Spot?

• Keep shooting in the various court areas and get the percentages up to reach the Hot Spot criteria mentioned before.
• Wait for 50 games and not shoot at all.

5. Find & Equip the Best Jump Shot for your MyPLAYER

Another important aspect of shooting in NBA 2K21 is choosing the right jump shot for your MyPlayer. Truthfully speaking, it’s hard to say which jump shot is the “absolute best” to use, as this can be a bit subjective. So, it’s best to do your own due diligence and spend some time in the gym to test out which jump shot or release you are most comfortable using.

Often, more advanced 2K players find generic jumpers a bit limiting. As a result, the Jump Shot Creator is another great tool that can open a new world of mechanics for those obsessed with the minute details.

This feature can be found by opening the “MyPlayer Appearance” tab in the MyCareer menu.

With the jump shot creator, you can customize every aspect of your shot from the base, upper release, and blending down to the release speed. You virtually have full autonomy of your player’s jump shot mechanics, and it is usually something many advanced players take advantage of to bring their game to the next level.

6. Master Shot Stick Aiming, Shot Meter, Shooting Button

1). Shot Stick Aiming Settings

Shot Stick Aiming is the most advanced shooting mechanic in the game. It can be further broken down into three different settings. The first is the most difficult, but if executed properly, will give your player the highest shooting boost.

• Shot Stick (R3/Right Stick) + left trigger for timing
• Shot Stick + no left trigger timing (removed)
• Shot Stick with aim meter turned off

2). How to use the Shot Stick?

• Move and hold (R3/Right Stick) down.
• After pulling down, flick the stick left or right towards the high-percentage area to make a shot. The closer it is to the middle of the bar, the higher chance the shooters will be able to green (obtain excellent release).

3). How to use Shot Button?

Press and hold (Square or X), and release as close to the high-percentage area to increase the chance of making a shot.

4). How to use NBA 2K21 shooting with a new shot meter?

In the previous editions of NBA 2K, the shot meter was a vertical curve with the objective being to time your shot just right for release.

5). How to use NBA 2K21 shot meter with a controller button?

Press Square on the PS4 controller or press the X button on Xbox One controller. This begins the shooting motion. You’ll see the shot meter appear above your player.

7. Practice Practice Practice

Take advantage of MyCOURT, 2KU, or Pro-Am Arena shootaround to work on new jump shots, work out the kinks in your shot, finding the sweet spot of when to release the ball, etc.

8. Get Your Shot IQ Up / Take Good Shots

Here are some tips to improve your Shot IQ:

1). Don’t settle for bad shots. Having patience, while also recognizing opportunity, is key. The shot clock gives you 24 seconds, so utilize it to the fullest. When you take a bad shot – i.e. heavily contested, rushed, forced, etc – it’s basically a gift to the defense and lets your opponent off the hook. Always strive to get good looks of the basket where the defender isn’t close enough to heavily contest the shot.

2). Make sure Shot Feedback is on (under Controller Settings).

9. Movement, Positioning, Spacing

Spacing the floor, movement and positioning, timing, and chemistry all factor into getting good looks to maximize shot success.

10. Know all the Shooting Controls

Getting familiar with every shot type is a great way to become a skilled shooter.

Lamelo Ball – 77 Overall

• Position: Point Guard
• Potential: 88

Obi Toppin – 76 Overall

• Team: New York Knicks
• Position: Power Forward
• Potential: 85

Obi Toppin definitely shows signs of the Clippers star with his 85 Driving Dunk and 80 Three-Point Shooting ratings. Defensively, he will need a major boost. The wing only has rebounding stats that lie in the 50s and 60s.

The 20-year-old averaged 20 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.2 blocks, and one steal in 31 games last season at the University of Dayton. He proved that he could score from virtually all over the floor, highlighted by his 39% shooting from 3-point range.

Onyeka Okongwu – 76 Overall

• Team: Atlanta Hawks
• Position: Power Forward
• Potential: 85

The Atlanta Hawks selected forward/center Onyeka Okongwu from the University of Southern California with the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

The 6’9 Okongwu led the Trojans in points per game, rebounds per game, and blocks per game in his only collegiate season, averaging 16.2 points, 8.6 boards, and 2.7 blocks in 28 appearances (all starts) in 2019-20.

At 6’9, he’s a great ball getter with his 79 Offensive rebounds and 75 Defensive Rebounds ratings. He cannot shoot like most forwards, but his 85 Standing Dunk makes him a worthy threat in the post.

Deni Avdija – 75 Overall

• Team: Washington Wizards
• Position: Small Forward
• Potential: 81

Deni Avdija is a 19-year-old who has been very impressive for Maccabi Tel Aviv in his professional career already. He has been able to show off his unique skills at a high-level for a few seasons now, making him a valuable draft prospect.

He was the youngest player to ever play for Maccabi Tel Aviv starting in 2017. Avdija made the most of his opportunity and eventually developed into a key player. He averaged 12.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game last season. In addition to his club career, Avdija also starred for his country. He helped Israel win the 2019 FIBA U20 European Championship and he was named MVP.

If you are low on NBA 2k21 mt or funds in MyLeague and need someone for cheap, settling for Avdija is a fantastic movie. With all of his shot types being rated in the 70s, he’s an all-around threat that will at least notch a 40% field goal percentage.

Patrick Williams – 75 Overall

• Team: Chicago Bulls
• Position: Small Forward
• Potential: 84

Patrick Williams went fourth overall to the Chicago Bulls in the 2020 NBA Draft.

Williams was named the ACC Sixth Man of the Year last season after averaging 9.2 points, four rebounds, one block, one assist, and one steal per game.

Although a top-10 rated rookie, Williams’s 68 Driving Layup and 60 Standing Dunk show why he isn’t number four on this list. With 88 Stamina, possibly consider him if you just need a tireless decoy all game.

Isaac Okoro – 75 Overall

• Team: Cleveland Cavaliers
• Position: Small Forward
• Potential: 84

The Cleveland Cavaliers selected Isaac Okoro. He is an exceptional athlete and can drive to the rim with ease. NBA 2K21 has captured this perfectly and has given him an 83 lateral quickness attribute and an 82 driving layup attribute.

Okoro was named to the All-SEC Second Team after averaging 12.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, and two assists. He is considered one of the best defensive players in the draft, and he projects to be a strong offensive player inside of the paint.

Devin Vassell – 74 Overall

• Team: San Antonio Spurs
• Position: Small Forward
• Potential: 84

The Spurs may have found their next Manu Ginobili – for good and bad reasons.

After not being highly recruited out of high school, Devin Vassell became a rotational player for Florida State as a freshman. He averaged 4.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. Vassell vastly improved as a sophomore, as he averaged 12.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. His play earned him All-ACC Second-Team honors, as Florida State was a National Championship contender near the end of the season with a 26-5 record.

Vassell’s 81 Three-Point Shooting makes him an absolute sniper in your lineup, enabling him to hit shots from most spots behind the line. However, with a 66 Driving Layup and 60 Driving Dunk, the simplest of shots may end up as turnovers.

Killian Hayes – 74 Overall

• Team: Detroit Pistons
• Position: Point Guard
• Potential: 85

Killian Hayes is one of the youngest players in the draft as an 18-year-old. Despite his youth, he has still played well at the pro level and is one of the best prospects in the 2020 NBA Draft class.

At 16 years old, Hayes started playing with Cholet’s senior team. He averaged just 2.2 points per game but got his feet wet with experience. In his second season with Cholet, Hayes upped his game with 7.2 points per game. This past season, he joined Ratiopharm Ulm, where he averaged 12.8 points and 6.2 assists per game. Hayes also has great experience with the French National Team as he has won a gold medal, silver medal and won the MVP of the 2017 FIBA U16 European Championship.

The French baller isn’t someone you’d ideally want on defense in online play. Someone could easily take advantage of his 55 Defensive Consistency and 50 Draw Foul ratings. That being said, he can facilitate some great offensive work with his 84 Pass IQ and 79 Driving Layup ratings.
