Takeover stacks & tiered play

New to the next-gen version of NBA 2K21 is the ability to set Primary and Secondary Takeovers.

When you’re in-game, your Takeover meter will fill up your primary Takeover slot first. Once filled, you can choose to activate it right away or wait to try and fill up your secondary slot. You take the risk of losing all your progress if you turn the ball over or miss a bad shot though.

But if you can fill in your secondary slot, you can activate both the primary and secondary takeovers together and keep them active for a longer period of time.

Finally, if you want to devastate your opponent even further, you can wait even longer and try to fill up the Team Takeover meter. If you can fill all three, activating will enable your entire teams’ Takeovers and it’s pretty much over for the competition.

How to change Takeover abilities?

To honor the late Kobe Bryant, who’s on the cover of the Mamba Forever Edition, the NBA 2K21 devs added a new Badge to this year’s game, entitled Mamba Mentality. To unlock this badge, you must have earned all of your character’s Badge points. Once you’ve acquired all of those Badge points and unlocked Mamba Mentality, you will have the ability to change your character’s Takeovers.

Think of how frustrating it can be to try to stop an offensive powerhouse, just to be picked off by his teammates time and time again. The Pick Dodger badge allows you to get around those picks and stick with your man on defense.

It also keeps your stamina from being greatly impacted by the repeated blows from opponents’ setting picks.

4. Interceptor

This badge is a genuine money-maker. If you are able to read passing lanes and position well, this badge will allow you to pick off cross-court passes easily.

A steal of this sort can lead to some easy baskets for your team in the fastbreak, which makes the Interceptor badge a useful addition.

We’ve found that bronze Interceptor works on builds with fewer badges (and even those with more badges), but higher levels of the badge are certainly better.

5. Rim Protector

Rim Protector is one of the key characteristics of any good center. Protecting the hoop from layups or dunks creates turnovers and even outlet passes for a fast break. This is a must pick.

Although most Big Men builds have a higher block rating, swatting shots is difficult without the Rim Protector badge. It gives you the boosts you need to block shots down low.

Bronze Rim Protector is fine for builds with a lower number of defensive badge points, but we’d recommend it on Gold or HOF for Defensive Big Men.

MyCareer is back for another year in NBA 2K21. This guide contains tips, tricks, and strategies needed for success in NBA 2K21 MyCareer mode. With these tips, you’ll be tearing up the competition in no time.

1. Make the right build

Deciding on which build to select is one of the first significant decisions that all 2K players have to make early on in MyCareer. Essentially, the archetype chosen will dictate your entire MyCareer experience. You should choose a build that lets you play the way you’ll enjoy.

If you don’t buy VC, it’ll take a lot of play to get your overall up by earning VC. This grind will be really dull and painstaking if you don’t enjoy using your build. It takes approximately 170,000 VC to get from 60 to 85 overall.

This entails hours of commitment and gameplay: from experience, it is not uncommon for many beginners to ditch their builds after a few weeks because their preferred playstyle doesn’t work with the created player.

So, when choosing a builder, it is essential to be sure that the playstyle and potential of the archetype is something you can see yourself sticking to for the long term.

2. Perform in the introduction/pre-draft

NBA 2K21’s MyCareer, as usual, doesn’t put you straight into the NBA. There’s a bunch to do before you’ve ever played a single NBA game.

An important part of the introduction is playing well in college games. To earn the maximum possible salary in your rookie season, you need to be at least the second overall pick. Also, your choice of agent is pretty key here.

3. Know what you want to use your build for

Not all builds are equal. Some shine in-park games (2v2 and 3v3), while others are built precisely to compete in Pro-Am and Rec games.

When creating your build, keep the modes that you want to play in mind; choosing a build that is not in line with your purpose will make the game a lot less enjoyable.

4. The best offense requires a strong defense

Defending is one of the things that instantly divides high skill players from low skill players. Having a good defense is the difference between winning and losing, so always be on the lookout for ways you can force your opponent into making risky plays that you can punish. By applying enough pressure, you’ll invariably force unwanted passes or shots that can be turned in your favor. While it can be tempting to stick really close to your foe, it’s almost always better to maintain a little distance so that they can’t just dash past you. This simple tip remains important regardless of your overall skill, so get used to marking any players who are likely to go for potential plays.

5. Grind for some VC

VC, or “virtual currency”, is the key to getting better in MyCareer.

MyCareer games, that is, NBA games, are a great way to get consistent VC. You’ll earn a salary for each game you play, plus incentives from sponsorships when you complete certain challenges.

There’s also a bunch of ways to get super quick VC. Doing the Daily Spin at Jeff’s 2K Arcade can get you up to a few thousand VC, and you can spin it more times the more you level up. Check on the Daily Spin daily to get some easy VC. Or answer questions on 2KTV when it pops up before games. If you get all the answers right in each episode, you can get a couple of thousand VC.

6. Get used to the new shot meter

The game features a revamped shooting system, so old and new players alike will have to get used to this. Instead of being timing-based, the new meter places a target space on some part of the meter. You need to move your stick to the left or right to find the middle of the zone. This is a big change from the old shooting system, so take some time to get used to it.

7. Work on your Badges

Badges are as important in 2K as VC, as badges give you that extra edge against players with the same stats. Badges act as a special boost in particular areas of your game and can be key in performing at the highest level in MyCareer.

You gain progress towards badges every time you play a MyCareer game. The other key is training. Unlocking training drills will give you a way to get huge progress towards badges between games. Make sure to always do team training, and you’ll be rewarded with insane amounts of progress for badges in a short space of time.

8. Focus on getting high teammate grades

In NBA 2K21, two of the best ways to maximize your VC earning potential is to get a good teammate grade and win as many games as possible.

The game encourages players in MyCareer to be team-oriented, with players getting rewarded for making good plays that help their team win.

It is easier to obtain a high teammate grade by consistently making good basketball plays, such as by boxing out, getting an assist, or grabbing rebounds, than by focusing on scoring.

If you want to earn VC and upgrade your player as fast as possible, focusing on getting that A + teammate grade and winning games have to be your priority.

9. Other Tips and Tricks for NBA 2K21 MyCareer

1). It’s easy to get gassed in MyCareer; your stamina drains very quickly. Stick to your default speed unless you’re on a fastbreak or chasing down a block. Your team will wait for you.

2). To access the Jump Shot Creator, attend the Team Practices before the games. After enough of these drills, the builder will unlock. Figure out which combination of movements coincides with your natural rhythm.

3). Using Team Practice will also unlock the option to choose your drills during practice.

4). Don’t play hero ball. When you’re starting out, only shoot the ball if you have a wide-open opportunity. A 60-rated player can’t do much except pass. But smart passing and spacing are enough to raise your Teammate Grade to a respectable level, especially if you get a couple of assists. Stay in your lane, and focus on making the rest of your team look good.

5). Don’t get into foul trouble. The coach will pull you from the 1st quarter if you commit two fouls, and he’ll pull you from the second quarter if you commit four fouls.

6). The easiest way to rack up fouls is to overcommit on defense. Don’t lunge at the ball by pressing the Steal button unless you see a clear opening; it’ll result in a reach-in foul. Manipulating the right stick is safer.

7). Know your team. Study their playbook to figure out how you fit into their offense.

8). Know what your teammates are capable of, especially the bench players. Can this guy shoot the three? Can this guy set a good screen? Work with what you have rather than doing it all yourself.

9). When in doubt, default to the pick and roll. If you’re in the frontcourt, set a screen. If you’re in the backcourt, call for one.

10). Until you get into the starting lineup of your NBA team, increase the quarter lengths. Otherwise, you’ll be subbing for too few minutes to make headway.

11). 2KU is a must. There are hundreds of different move combinations in this game, and the tutorial is both visually friendly and thorough.

12). Experiment with using the right analog stick on offense. You can also press the Shoot button, but the analog stick will give you finer control over the type of shot or layup you use.

13). Always remember to spin the prize wheel in the Neighborhood, which you can do once every 24 hours. You can get anything from Gatorade boosts to free tattoos to VC.

14). You’ll have to answer reporters’ questions after every game. You’ll be prompted to choose one of two responses. A response that celebrates your abilities will earn Fans. A response that celebrates your team or coach will earn Team Chemistry.

15). Haircuts are free.

Modes

1) MyTEAM Unlimited 2.0

Another game mode in NBA 2K21 MyTEAM is MyTEAM Unlimited 2.0, which is making its return with some new tweaks.

MyTEAM Unlimited 2.0 puts players through 9 leagues that each consist of 12 games. Players can progress through the leagues by meeting win requirements for each that will get steadily more challenging.

2) Triple Threat Online/Offline

The Triple Threat mode is such a simple mode, yet it’s incredibly effective and what makes it even better is the fact that there are equally good rewards whether you play online or offline.

3) MyTEAM Limited

MyTEAM Limited is a game mode that challenges players by limiting roster options in new ways every weekend.

4) Domination

Playing Domination is generally a good way of earning Tokens in the game, which can then be used to upgrade cards to higher tiers without spending MT or VC in-game currencies. There are, however, specific Amathyst and Diamond player rewards, too.

Domination rewards are accumulated by earning stars, which you’ll get both for winning and playing well (lots of points, assists, and rebounds, few turnovers, etc).

5) Challenges

Challenges are broken down into daily, weekly, monthly, and lifetime. These challenges help you pick up some extra value while grinding game modes.

Auction House

The NBA 2K21 MyTeam Auction House is the place for buying and selling player cards and other collectibles used in the mode. Basically, it’s like an eBay-style area where gamers can list their items, and then other gamers can bid on them or buy now. Many gamers use this as a way to earn additional MT, one of the in-game currencies available for the popular MyTeam mode.

The Auction House allows for really drilling down search results based on what you are trying to buy too. For example, you can search for only the Diamond or Opal cards available. Or, you can search by minimum/maximum prices, card theme, player name, team, and many other types of searches.

Packs

The way that most people bulk out their club is through the pack market.

There is a range of base packs which will stay on the market throughout the year, as well as promotional packs which are ever changing.

Packs can be bought with MT points – which are earned through playing games or selling players – or VC – which can be purchased through your respective market.

Collections / The Exchange

Most unconventional way to unlock players is through Collections or via The Exchange.

If you complete a full team – for instance the current Boston Celtics – you will earn a special card dedicated to that team.

The Exchange – a new feature for 2K21 – gives players a specific set of cards that they have to exchange in order to get a special card in return.

The Spurs legend is a part of three Spurs teams. The 41-year-old won four championships with the Spurs and was a two-time All-Star.

Ginobili played in 1,057 regular-season and 218 playoff games for San Antonio. He finished his career ranked in the top five all time in games, points (14,043), assists (4,001) and steals (1,392) in Spurs franchise history. The bald Manu is part of the 13-14 San Antonio Spurs’ classic team as an 83 overall SG and the All-Time San Antonio Spurs team as a 90 overall SG. The one with flowing locks is part of the 04-05 Spurs classic team as an 87 overall SG.

Andrea Bargnani

The 2006 number one overall pick, Andrea Bargnani has been added to NBA 2K21.

He is a part of the All-Time Toronto Raptors team as an 84 overall C. Bargnani was very versatile as a big man. Not only could he play in the post, but he can play on the perimeter too. He could shoot from three made him a threat on offense in multiple ways. With him playing with older players really helped improved his game a lot. Bargnani had the opportunity to play against the Raptors while he was overseas. The Raptors saw something in him then and decided to make him their top choice in the draft.

Lamar Odom

Lamar Odom was only available on MyTeam in the previous game. But now the 82 overall SF has been added to the All-Time Los Angeles Clippers team.

Lamar Odom is mostly remembered by his time with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he won two back-to-back NBA championships. Odom’s NBA career was pretty decent, as he even received a couple of awards, including the Sixth Man of the Year Award in 2011.

For Clippers, with his addition to the offline rosters, one can only wonder how long before 2K adds the iconic 2009-10 Lakers team to the game.

Kirk Hinrich

The Chicago Bulls All-Time team has added one more point guard to the roster. Kirk Hinrich makes his entry into offline rosters this year, after only being available on MyTeam in 2K20.

He was drafted by the Chicago Bulls with the seventh pick in the 2003 NBA Draft, where he earned the nickname “Captain Kirk”. Hinrich is the Bulls’ all-time leader in three-point field goals. After seven seasons with the Bulls, he had short stints with the Washington Wizards and Atlanta Hawks before returning to the Bulls in 2012.

The 82 overall PG looks to be a fan favorite, especially with his iconic glasses.

Luis Scola

Argentine Olympics gold medallist Luis Scola is back in the game after a two-year absence. He joins Rafer Alston on the 07-08 Houston Rockets classic team as a 76 overall PF and is also a part of the 13-14 Indiana Pacers team as a 73 overall PF.

Though a bigger and more prominent name in Europe, Scola did enough in his 10-year NBA stint to be remembered by fans as an effective and entertaining player. His peak came in his 2009-2012 run with the Houston Rockets. Scola averaged around 16.7 points and 7.8 rebounds for those regular seasons.
