Get used to the shooting stick: The shooting stick might seem intimidating at first, but learning to time your release with the shooting stick will produce much more accurate shots over time.

Practice your shooting skills in training mode: One of the quickest and easiest methods to get better at shooting is to simply head out into the game’s training mode. This useful feature allows you to practice all the different shooting types and nail the perfect shot, making it a great place to try out different shots before diving into competitive games.

Always find the open man: Spacing your offense properly against a tough defender can be quite challenging. Often, driving to the hoop can distract the defense enough for you to find an open man beyond the arc to kick the ball out to.

Pay close attention to the shot meter: Watching shooting animations has always been important in NBA 2K, you can simply watch the shot meter to unleash a perfect shot. The meter will gradually fill up as you hold down the action button, giving you more power the longer you hold it down. It’s important to try and release the ball as soon as the shot meter is filled to the top. If done correctly, the shot meter will glow green and your player will unleash the ball with deadly power and precision.

Take advantage of the pick and roll: By hitting the left bumper (or L1 on PS4), one of your larger players will come set a pick next to the person defending you, creating a screen that will allow to either get an open look, or dish it to an open center down in the post.

Know your release: This is the case with pretty much any player you will use in the game, everyone has their own shooting technique and release timing. So again, get on the 2KU court, practice with your team and learn how each player releases the ball because although they may have a good three-point shot on paper if your release isn’t up to scratch, you will struggle to drain those shots.

Know Your Hot Spots: Another key element to learning how to shoot the perfect three is knowing the hot zones of your players. The best way to do this is to hit the court on 2KU and start experimenting with your favorite teams and players. While in practice mode, press Select to pull up the Hot Spots graphic which will show you the zones on the court that you shoot the best at. Hot spot zones will also increase as you increase your shooting attributes.

Choose Shooter Signature Skills: The best shooters will be the combination of user intangibles (i.e. knowing when to take the shot), using a player with high outside shot attributes, and having multiple shooting signature skills. When you combine those along with an excellent shot selection, a player like this can be almost unstoppable.

Experiment with Various Jump Shots: If you haven’t found the right shot yet, you may want to just try experimenting with different shot bases and releases (via Edit Player). A fast way to practice different NBA player’s signature shots is to create a custom team and fill it with NBA players that you shoot well within the game.
